Microneedling vs Microdermabrasion: What’s the Difference?

Have you ever walked into a fancy spa and looked over their menu, not knowing which of the spa treatments is the correct one for you? With so many different cosmetic procedures available to enhance your natural beauty or give your skin a much-needed a lift, it can be difficult to figure out what the difference between all of them are.

But no worries–we here at Min’s Permanent Makeup & Spa are here to help clear up any confusion around spa treatments and help you made the best decision possible!

Microneedling and microdermabrasion have often been used in the same breath, as if they are the same exact treatment. Today, we’re clear up the difference between microneedling and microdermabrasion to help you choose the best treatment for your own personal needs.

Microneedling vs Microdermabrasion

  • Microneedling

Microneedling is a fairly gentle procedure–in order to generate new collagen and help the skin tissue become smoother and firmer, a dermaroller utilizes tiny needles to prick the skin and encourage it to become healthier and younger looking. This treatment is most typically used on the face as a way to treat and promote healing of scars, deep wrinkles, fine lines, and large pores.

Microneedling would be one of the best spa treatments for you if you’re just trying to minimize the appearance of blemishes and large pores, as well as improve your overall skin tone. Not only will you begin to notice improvements in your skin almost immediately, a study showed that regular microneedling treatments can improve collagen production by almost 400%, so it’s in your interest to keep going back.

  • Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a bit different and used for more extreme cases–instead of using tiny needles to prick the skin, this time a special applicator that contains an abrasive surface is used to rub away the outer layer of skin, revealing healthier skin underneath. This treatment can help to improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scars, sun damage, and much more.

Typically, this procedure is used to help renew and repair skin that has been damaged in some way. If you’re looking to renew your overall skin tone and reduce the appearance of bad acne scars and blemishes, microdermabrasion might be for you.

  • Which is Best for You?

Depending upon what you’re looking to treat, it can be hard to decide between microneedling and microdermabrasion.

A good rule of thumb is this: are you looking to generate collagen and give your skin a younger appearance? If so, go with microneedling.

On the other hand, are you trying to minimize the appearance of damaged skin? Then microdermabrasion might be a better procedure for you.

Before You Go..

No matter which way you’ve decided to help treat your skin, the easiest way to help with the anxiety surrounding a new beauty treatment is always to research it. Microneedling and microdermabrasion are both fantastic spa treatments to help improve the appearance of your skin without any surgical help needed.
